Sports Study Exploration & Visit from Dr. Clifford

We have been working hard on our sports study and continuing to explore some of the different sports in various ways. We also finished our black mosaic and started on our pink mosaic. After our pink and white mosiacs are finished I told the students that I had a surprise to bring in for them to use in the art area!
The students continued to observe the different sports balls in our "look closer" area. Brooklyn was using our microscope to look closer at a tennis ball. They have also been working with sports balls in our small hands area by trying to wrap them with rubber bands like Jay'Veon is doing with a golf ball.
We watched a greatest moments video for soccer, football and basketball. The students were very excited to watch these and during the videos they were amazing with the great sports plays. They were cheering and yelling "OOHH" during all of them!
After watching the videos, the students documented some of their favorite moments in their exploration journals.

Here are some of the books that we have been reading and using as resources. The visual reference book has been able to provide us with in depth pictures and descriptions of each sport. I will be showing them videos of the sports as long as I can find them in order to provide them a visual of these sports we are learning about. The Sports Zone book below is like an I Spy book with a sports theme.
These two books below were very silly books and the students enjoyed listening to them! Little Granny Quarterback becomes a quarterback and How to Train with a T-Rex was written by Michael Phelps and discusses how hard he had to train for the olympics.
We have added this book to our writing area. It shows the students how to draw different football players so they are able to write about them.
We finished our V and X alphabet cards this week and our alphabet wall is now complete! I will post a picture in the next blog post. We will now begin to talk about blends such as th, sh, ch, etc.
We earned our books for our last letters as well.
Dr. Clifford came to visit us Friday to discuss West Carrollton's mission, mascot, school colors, and our 40 developmental assets. He asked them to think about what they wanted to be when they grow up and called on a few volunteers to share. Of course we ended the assembly with our Pirate song. They enjoyed hearing from Dr. Clifford!
Thanks for stopping by! Have a great week!

Continuing our Sports Study

This week we continued the investigation stage of our sports study. We added various sports balls to our look closer area for the students to observe. They used magnifying glasses to look closer at the details and then documented what they noticed.
We also continued to work on our black mosaic.
We enjoyed working in our new math and literacy centers. Matching the numbers to the same number of objects.
Comparing weight using a scale.
Matching number word and number to the correct number of dots. Making shapes using geoboards and rubber bands.
Using the number word and counting the dots to figure out which number to write on the cards. Find the pumpkins with the matching number, number word, and number of dots.
Writing sight words on our "cell phones".
"Feeding" letter and sight word fish to the penguin. Matching the pictures to the letter with same beginning sound.
Putting together rhyming puzzles by matching the pictures of the rhyming words.
Putting pictures in sequential order to show what happened first, next, after that, and last in a specific event.
We added words to our word wall and added all new sight words to our easel to focus on. These are the words that we are now focusing on:
We made our list of words that began with the long and short U sounds and made our alphabet card for our word wall.
Can you believe that the school year is already half way over? Since Friday was the last day of second quarter and report cards are coming, we updated our achievement rings. For each achievement they earn, they get a bead for their ring such as identifying upper and lower case letters, being able to rhyme, counting to 100, etc.
We also continued to read stories about sports as a class as well as in our listening and library areas.
We read books about being a good sport, winner and loser. We also read about never quitting or giving up and using persistence when something gets hard.
Each day we have focused on a few different sports and we have talked about some of the rules, equipment, teams, etc that have to do with those particular sports.
We read a football ABC book as well as a color, and opposite book about football.
We made a list of things that we already know about sports as well as things we want to know about sports.
These questions will help guide our investigation and exploration throughout our sports study.
Thanks for stopping by! Other than having Monday off for Martin Luther King Jr. day, we have a normal week.

Have a great week!
