Ice Cream Party, Reading Buddies, Pumpkins & More!

This week we learned about the letters Q, G, S & O. Take a look at the letter cards full of the students awesome illustrations!
Here are the books they earned this week, including their orange book. We added our orange mosaic and label to the wall next to our class promise and purple mosaic.
These are all of the sight words that we have been practicing! They are displayed on our easel until the students master it, and then we will add it to our word wall under the alphabet letter that it begins with. The students are working hard to show me that they know each of the words!
Like I mentioned before, the students earned a class reward and voted on an ice cream party. On Wednesday we had our party and the students were so excited! They loved the ice cream! They got to choose a chocolate or vanilla ice cream cup along with sprinkles, chocolate syrup, and whipped cream. Thanks to those who donated items for our ice cream party!

We have been working really hard on drawing stories in order to share them with you all at conferences! If your child draws a picture at home, ask them to tell you about their story!
In their writing folders, when they are done with a story they put it in the side with the red sticker. If they are still working on it after writing time is over, they put it in the side with a green sticker.
I have been meeting with each student to discuss these 2 rubrics, one where they can self-assess their writing and the other where I help them figure out what writing stage they are currently at based on our Kindergarten requirements.
On Friday we had Mrs. Vogt's preschool class come back to visit our classroom. The Kindergarteners read books and shared their illustrations and stories with the students. Afterwards, we shared some of our favorite songs with them!
I brought in a few pumpkins for the students to observe in the science area and they are really interested in learning more about them!
The students said they wanted to carve our pumpkin so I asked them to illustrate what they wanted it to look like! I can't wait to continue our pumpkin investigation, we have many exciting learning experiences coming up in the next few weeks!
I also picked up our prizes from the library on Thursday for completing the Get Outside Book Club.
They are containers for students to collect bugs, rocks, seeds, etc. I forgot to pass them out on Friday but I will send them home with the students on Monday! They also gave us a book about leaves for our classroom library!
Thank you for checking in with us. Stop by next week to see what we are learning about!
Have a great week!

Orange Experiment, Environmental Print, Preschool Reading Buddies, & More!

In Literacy Lab this week, we practiced identifying the letters T & S, their sounds, reading books about the letters, and writing words that begin with those letters.
We sorted pictures by their beginning sounds.
We finished up our Get Outside Book Club by reading our last two books this week. First we read "Max Found Two Sticks" and on the playground we used sticks to make music just like Max did.
We also read a book about bugs. When we went outside on the playground, the children were looking everywhere for bugs! Ayden found a grasshopper and Elizabeth caught an ant.
We finished up our treasure blocks this week by learning about these 3 friends. Stay tuned in next week's post to see what our writer's workshop will look like!
We did another color mixing experiment this week. Each student got a ziploc bag with red and yellow paint inside. First we predicted what we thought would happen when they mixed together. Then the students got to mix them together. They were excited that they made orange! We also learned how to spell the color word orange.
Then we documented what we noticed in our exploration journals.
We finished our purple mosaic and got to take home our purple color book.
 We learned about the letters X, Y, Z & C this week.
We learned about environmental print that we see all around us. We made environmental print books and each student chose their 4 favorite environmental print pictures for their book.
 We practiced reading the words.
We glued them in our books and then we practice reading our books.
We had preschoolers come visit our classroom on Friday. They will be our reading buddies and we will be working with them every Friday. Our Kindergarten students practiced reading past color books, letter books and their environmental print books to the preschool students that they were paired up with. They really enjoyed getting to read to the preschoolers!
Elizabeth was chosen for the school's asset builder of the month. Congratulations Elizabeth!
Thank you for checking in! Come back again next week to see what we are up to!
Have a great week!
