We have been reading books and doing activities about nature for the Get Outside Book Club through the library. We read the book "Leaf Man" on Monday. The students wanted to create their own leaf pictures so we went out to the playground and each student collected a bag full of leaves. We brought their bags in and they glued the leaves onto the paper to create a picture.
Some of them wanted to create a leaf man just like the book, some created a smiley face and some created a circle. They all turned out so great, I love how creative the students got with this activity. Take a look at some of their pictures below!
On Tuesday we took a walking field trip to the library with Mrs. Scherch's class.
The children's librarian, Ms. Gina, read the students a story.
She gave us a tour of the library and showed us where to find the children's books. They students got to each choose a book off the shelf to look at.
We used the self checkout to "checkout" our books. Ms. Gina let us put the books on her card.
Then our class went outside to learn how to use the book drop. Each student dropped their books into the book drop.
Mrs. Scherch's class went outside to put their books into the book drop and we got to see behind the scenes where the books go. The students were so excited by this!
Thank you for having us Ms. Gina!!
The police officers were very nice to block the road for us as we crossed the street. The students were waving to them and thanking them for helping us!
Ms. Gina gave us all stickers to wear to remind us of our trip.
We learned about these 5 friends who shared their treasure blocks this week! We will be finishing up with sharing our treasure blocks this week.
A former student, Kristen, is a third grader at Harold Schnell. She was on her fall break and she asked if she could come visit and read to the class. I am so glad she did because the students really enjoyed it! She had such great inflection and really got into character. She read a Mo Willems book and the students really enjoyed her reading to them!
The students earned their green color book by proving they knew how to spell green!
We were ready to learn how to spell a new color, so we did another color mixing experiment. Each table had a cup with red water and a cup with blue water. They put a paper towel with one end in each cup of water and the other ends in a middle cup that was empty. We waited and observed to see what would happen. While we waited we made lots of predictions!
The students were so excited to see the "magic" that happened as the water moved to the middle cup and it turned purple!
We are now working on our purple mosaic.
Here are the 4 mosaics we have completed so far. They turned out great!
We learned 4 new letters and their sounds this week as well.
The alphabet cards the students created look awesome!
In literacy lab we focused on the letters C & F. We have been working hard in literacy lab in order to practice these letters and their sounds. We read stories about words that begin with each letter, practiced writing those words, sorted pictures by beginning sounds, colored pictures that began with those sounds, and many more!
We also worked on a pumpkin counting book this week.
In order to get ready for our Family Literacy Night, we finished up our Mo Willems character drawings. Check out our next post about our Family Literacy Night.
Thanks for checking in! Come back next week to see what we are up to! Don't forget that Wednesday is QPT day and the students do not have school! Have a great week!!
