We had another busy week this week and we worked very hard on many things! We worked on reading and literacy skills in literacy lab, learned about "pretty poisons", studied groundhog's day, completed some Valentine's Day activities, had a visit from our preschool reading buddies, watched Mr. Popper's Penguins, and finished our last 5 lowercase letters for our alphabet wall.
We worked very hard in literacy lab this week. In the listening center, the students listened to The Three Billy Goats Gruff and drew a picture of their favorite part, practiced reading a story with Ms. Roland, stamping/making words with Mrs. Boyd, and stretching out words & writing them with Mrs. Arnold.
When the students worked with me, they reread "In The Big Bag" from last week and we read "The Gingerbread Man". The students talked with their peers about their favorite part and retelling the story to each other. As a group, we talked about sight words that we spotted throughout the book and highlighted them. The students then got to take their book home so they could practice. Ask them to read it to you!
We had two nursing students come to talk to our class about "pretty poisons" (things that are poisonous but look like things we eat or drink). They showed examples such as windex and gatorade that look similar but one is something we drink and one is poisonous. They discussed how the students should consult an adult before they eat or drink anything found around the house just to make sure.
With Groundhog's Day on Thursday, I added this groundhog survey to our survey workstation for the students to complete throughout the week and they really enjoyed it! Most of the students thought the groundhog wouldn't see his shadow so that spring would come faster (including myself) but we were wrong!
We watched the video of the men putting Punxsutawney Phil on the stump and seeing his shadow as well as the video of them announcing the outcome to the crowd. The students thought that it was so cool to witness this famous event!
Afterwards, we read a Groundhog's Day easy reader, the students colored it, and took it home to share with their families. Ask them to read it to you!
We also read a Valentine book, "Valentine, What Color is Your Heart?" and the students practiced reading their color words in order to color the hearts the appropriate color.
The students shared their Valentine books, as well as two of their pieces of writing from the week with their preschool reading buddies on Friday. This week in writing we worked on writing "I See" sentences including writing "I see a groundhog" and documenting what we saw on Groundhog's Day.
Since we finished reading our book "Mr. Popper's Penguins" this week, we watched the movie on Friday and compared how the two were similar and different. The students really enjoyed the movie and it was very different from the book!
We finished our last 5 lowercase letters for our alphabet wall this week and the students were so proud of their hard work!
Here is our completed alphabet wall! The students will continue to use this as a reference if they forget what a letter looks like or what sound it makes. We will continue to add sight words underneath each letter as the students master them.
In order to get ready for Valentine's Day, the students all decorated bags to keep their Valentines in. If the students bring in a box to put their valentines in, they can use the bag as an extra or just take it home. The students really enjoyed decorating their bag however they wished and making it their own. We will continue to get ready for Valentine's Day & the 100th day of school during this coming week as well.
Since I forgot to take a picture for last week's blog, here is a picture of our completed color mosaics. They turned out awesome! The students will use them as a reference if they need to see how to spell the color words.
Thanks for checking in, have a great week!
Mrs. Brittany Garrabrant
