Returning from Spring Break, we had a busy week full of so many full activities! We have been working hard in literacy lab on our reading and comprehension skills, learned how to write many different types of poems, started working on our Student Treasures poetry book, planted flowers, had our 3rd quarter caring rally, and began learning about dinosaurs. Take a look below to find out more!
As the groups worked with me in Literacy Lab, we practiced reading stories and then retelling, discussing our favorite parts, and making connections to the text. They also worked with Mrs. Roland on reading and story comprehension.
The students worked with Mrs. Boyd on making sight words, Mrs. Arnold on sounding out and writing 3 letter words, and listened to the story "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" in the listening area.
We have been learning about how to write poems and many of the different types of poems. Here are just a few of the books that we read as well as previous classes Student Treasures poetry books in order to get inspiration.
We worked on Alphabet poems. As you can see in the top left picture, we worked on a template for the students to base their poems on. They did an awesome job and worked so hard on these! Take a look below to see some of the students' poems.
We also worked on writing acrostic poems with the word 'Spring'.
Another type of poem we wrote was an -ing poem where all of the words end with -ing.
We also wrote a 5 senses poem about a Jelly Bean where the students had to write about what it looked like, felt like, sounded like (we had to be creative for this one), smelled like, and tastes like. The students enjoyed this type of poem very much!
You can see the template I wrote for them in the top left and the students had to finish each sentence. As you can see we sounded out the word jelly bean but the rest I demonstrated the correct spelling.
We also wrote list poems which can be about lots of different things such as places, animals, colors, etc. As you can see below all the students wanted to write for these poems were color list poems.
The students voted on what they wanted to call our poetry book and they decided on "Our Poems". The students worked on creating our cover page using colors and our title page with only black and white. A couple of students have also started writing their poems and pictures to go along with them on the pages for our book.
Here is our completed cover page (top left), title page (top right), as well as 2 examples of student's finished poems and pictures for our book. So far they are all turning out awesome!
When Mrs. Boxley came in this week, she helped the students plant flowers so we could observe them grow in our classroom.
On Friday we had our 3rd Quarter Caring Rally where we discussed how they care for their family and friends. We sent home strips of paper last quarter and you returned them showing how you demonstrated caring. We put them all into one big long chain to represent the whole school and displayed it at our rally on Friday (in the second collage below). Then, each class made a puzzle piece in art class to represent a theme of how they could care for their friends and family. During the caring rally, a volunteer from each class placed their class's puzzle piece on a template of a heart. When we were finished, the heart represented how the school demonstrates caring and it looks fantastic! The students were so proud.
The class has been very interested in learning about dinosaurs so this week we began reading many different dinosaurs. They are very interested to learn more and I can't wait to see where it takes us and what we learn about next. Here are some of the books that we read this week.
Thanks for checking in. Stop back next week to see what we are up to next! Have a great week.
Mrs. Brittany Garrabrant
