We had another fun filled week her in Kindergarten! The students played on our new areas on the playground; the sensory path and the car/truck area. We also learned about 4 new friends, practiced labeling, worked hard in Literacy Lab, worked on 5 letters and earned their green color book. We also made a red mosiac, created our class promise, and did a color mixing experiment with Miss Riggs' class to make orange! We worked with our PAX teacher, Mrs. Phillip on voice levels and worked with our school's mental health therapist, Mrs. Lipps on how to stay focused while working. Students worked with their preschool reading buddies and learned about the children's author Mo Willems.
Take a look below for more details on our awesome week!
The students enjoyed exploring the new sensory path on our playground. If you didn't already, check out my other blog post for more pictures and videos about our sensory path!
Students also enjoyed working in our car & truck area!
We learned about 4 new friends this week: Naeem, Mrs. Boxley, Ellie & Mersiyah. The students drew pictures for those friends and made a book all about them.
On Friday we worked on labeling our pictures. You can see below students labeled color words as well as sounded out and labeled the first letter of other parts of their picture.
In Literacy Lab, students worked on various literacy skills such as:
Recognizing and tracing letters
Reading and coloring stories about items that begin with the same letter.
Worked hard on their reading iReady lessons.
On Friday we did rotations and the students worked in the following stations:
Name Writing. We are now working on writing the first letter uppercase and the rest of the letters lowercase.
Students worked in their Journey's reader's notebook to practice writing the letter of the day.
We also worked on documenting the main idea of a story about families & nouns we use for various people in our family such as mother, father, sister, brother, grandfather, cousin, etc.
Students took home books for the letters K-O as well as earned their green color book.
Mrs. Boxley worked with students to create our red mosaic and I hung it up in our classroom. The students will be making one for all of the colors that we learn how to spell.
We also worked together to create our class promise. We talked about the things that we would like to have happen in our classroom and students signed their name to promise they would follow the things on our list. I also hung it up in our classroom so the students can see it all the time!
Mrs. Phillip came to work with us on PAX voice levels. We discussed the different voice levels that we use; o inch (no voice), 3 inch (whisper), 3 foot (talking), and 10 foot (yelling). She read the story Old Mcdonald had a farm using the various voice levels and the students had to show what voice level she was using. They did awesome with this!
We went to Miss S's class and our mental health therapist, Mrs. Lipps worked with our classes on how to stay focused while working or listening.
We did a color mixing experiment with Miss Riggs' class on Friday with paint! First we documented what the students were seeing, a paper plate with yellow and red paint on it inside a ziploc bag. Then the students predicted what they thought was going to happen when they mixed the colors together!
Then we went over to Miss Riggs' class to do our experiment. The students worked hard to mix the paints together and made orange! We figured out that there were many different shades of orange, some made a yellow-orange and some made more of a red-orange.
Students really enjoyed this experiment and they turned out really great! We will be doing another fun activity with our paper plates this week so be looking for that.
After we were finished, the students documented what they noticed happened and discussed if they were correct when they predicted what would happen.
On Friday we also worked with our Preschool Reading Buddies. The Kindergarten students read their letter O book to their reading buddy and then enjoyed a snack with them as they got to know them. Then we sang some songs with them! The students did such a great job working with them.
This week, we also began learning about the Children's author Mo Willems. We read some of his stories and the students thought they were very funny!
Students could choose to learn how to draw one of Mo Willems characters from his books;
Pigeon, Elephant, Piggie, and the Naked Mole Rat.
Next week at Literacy Night, I will be doing some activities with Mo Willems books so I will be displaying all of the students completed drawings! I can't wait for you to see them all, they turned out so cute.
I was able to get our class sponsored so that each student will be receiving a free book every month! Here are the students with their free books, they were so excited!
Here is the paper I sent home explaining. From now on beginning on Monday, I will be sending a paper home each month asking you to choose which free book your child will receive.
Other important papers sent home this week:
Information about our field trip. Please return this form as soon as you can along with $6 and your child's lunch choice (packing their own lunch or buying a school sack lunch).
Home letter about our Journey's unit for the week.
Information about paying school fees.
Thank you to everyone who returned your child's September Reading Log & Homework! When students return a Reading Log that is signed by a parent, they can choose a treasure from the treasure box and I will send home a coupon for a free child pizza at Pizza Hut. Students who complete a Bingo on the homework will get to choose one treasure and completing the whole thing will get two!
Thanks for stopping by this week! Check back next week to see what we are up to next.
Have a great week and hope to see you all at Literacy Night on Thursday & our Fall Family Scavenger Hunt on Saturday!
