Poetry and More!

We had a fun and busy last week before break! I enjoyed meeting with you all for conferences this week to discuss your child's academics and progress. We received the art trophy, worked hard in Literacy Lab, continued to work on writing different kinds of poems, and students made the cover and title pages for our Poetry book. Students also completed a self-evaluation to share with their families for conferences, we finished reading our book 101 Dalmatians as well as watched the movie, and students got to take home their March free book of the month.

Our class earned the art trophy and got to display it outside our room all week!

 As always, students worked hard in Literacy Lab. They worked with me on reading and coloring a penguin number book as well as practicing the sight word 'little'.

 They also worked hard on their iReady lessons as well!

We continued to work on writing different types of poems. Last week we learned All About Me, Alphabet, and 5 Senses Poems. This week we worked on -ing and list poems. Take a look at some examples of each type below. I forgot to get an example of an -ing poem but each line has a word that ends with -ing. When we come back from Spring Break, we will be learning 2 more types of poems and then working on making our Poetry Book!

They also worked on our title page and it turned out great!

 We continued to practice sounding out CVC words.

Students completed a self-evaluation and shared them with their families at conferences.

We finished reading our book 101 Dalmatians so we got to watch the movie and the students loved it! We will start reading a new book after break.

Students were so excited to receive their free book of the month for March!

Our collection ended and thank you so much to everyone who donated money! Our class ended up in 6th place but more importantly, our school ended up raising over $2,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!!

 Our class will be publishing a Poetry Book through Student Treasures. If you would like to order a copy, please fill this form out and return it by Monday, April 8th. Even if you do not want to order a copy, please mark no, sign the bottom and return it to school.

If you do want to order a copy of our Poetry book, you can order it online and save $2! Once you complete your order, it will give you a code to fill in on the form and return to school.

Into to Poetry, St. Patrick's Day & More!

We had another busy and fun week here in Kindergarten! We worked on our Journey's curriculum, in Literacy Lab, and started learning about poetry. So far the students have learned how to write an all about me, an alphabet and a 5 senses poem! Two of my former students, Kayla & Killion came to visit and they both read  stories to our class. They also stayed and students read the poems they were working on to them. We did a few St. Patrick's Day writing activities this week; students wrote about what they would do if they found a pot of gold and who is worth more than gold to them.  Students also shared their portfolios with their classmates and with their preschool reading buddies. We also had an Irish Dancing performance in honor of St. Patrick's Day and so much more.

Our Journey's Focus Wall for the week

Students worked in their Reader's Notebook to review all of our sight words throughout the unit.

We also reviewed the letter sounds that we have learned throughout this unit.

We also worked on retelling a story that we read and verbs in the past tense.

I forgot to take pictures from Literacy Lab the rest of the week but we worked on guided reading and other fun literacy activities the rest of the week. For fun Friday, students did a directed drawing of a leprechaun. They had to follow the step by step directions in order to make their drawing. 

 Like I mentioned, we started working on Poetry this week. Students learned how to write All About Me Poems, Alphabet Poems, and a 5 Senses Poem. I will post examples of the poems in next week's blog post. So far students are really enjoying poetry and are looking forward to learning how to write more types of poems. We will be learning more next week and after Spring Break as well. Then we will be publishing a book through Student Treasures. I will explain more details at conferences!

 For our 5 senses poem, students got a jellybean and wrote about what it looked like, felt like, sounded like, smelled like, and tasted like! The students really enjoyed this type of poem!

 Former students of mine, Kayla & Killion came back and they read stories to the class. 

They also stayed and listened to the students read the poems they were working on to them. 

They loved hearing the students read their work to them! 

We did a St. Patrick's Day writing activity where students wrote about what they would do if they found a pot of gold. They came up with some funny and creative responses!

Mrs. Phillip came for our PAX lesson this week and we did another fun St. Patrick's Day activity where students wrote about who meant more than gold to them. 

 Students practiced sharing their portfolios with their classmates in order to prepare for conferences. 

They also shared them with their preschool reading buddies. 

 On Friday we had an Irish dancing performance from Richens-Timm Academy of Irish Dance.

The students enjoyed the performances and they were clapping along! 

Students also chose their free Scholastic book for March. We will be getting our books this week.

We continued to read our 101 Dalmatians book and we are almost done!

We read some St. Patrick's Day books too.

 I upped our iReady goal for the 2 weeks because students passed our last one by so much and they passed this one as well! So since they earned it, we will be having extra recess one day this week.

I took this video on Tuesday and sent it to my cousin who plays for Wright State and he was so appreciative for the support. Even though they lost the Horizon League tournament, their season is not over and they will be playing Clemson in the NIT tournament this week. Go Raiders! 

This was our last week to collect money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Nolan and his family brought in a huge shoe box of pennies to donate. Mrs. Schieman put them in a back pack to bring them up to the class and show the students and they were so excited and thankful to him for helping our class! We will find out which class won first place tomorrow!
