Color Changing Experiment, Fall Activities, Writers Workshop, and more!

We've had another fun filled week! We reviewed all of the sight words we've learned so far, worked on the letter S, did a fun color changing experiment with Miss. Riggs' friends, explored some new workstations, and so much more!

In Journey's this week we focused on reviewing the sight words we have learned so far this year! (I, and, the, like). We also focused on the letter S and the sound that it makes, as well as identifying words that start with the sound /s/ and /m/.

Below are some pictures I took during Journey's while the students read a sentence and decided which word would be best in the sentence based off of the choices. They also practiced writing the sight words. We also did similar activities in the students work books, but I did not get photographs of those.

In Literacy Lab this week we have been focusing on the letters B and R. We have practiced identifying words that start with that letter, writing the letters in their capital and lowercase form, as well as coming up with words on our own that start with those letters.

The students did a picture sort where they sorted pictures of items that started with either the /b/ or /r/ sound. They also read a B and R book together as a group, and independently.

Along with learning about the sounds that the letters make, we also practiced writing the letters using dry erase boards! The students enjoyed writing the letters, as well as going through and finding their best letter and circling it, and finding letters that they could work on and redoing them.

The students also did a picture sort for the letters B and A. The students cut out the different items and glued them to either the A or B side depending on which sound the item made.

Mrs. Coberly also worked with her small groups on letter recognition, sounds, and the letters B and R. As always, the students also practiced their reading skills on I-Ready.

This week the students went to Miss. Riggs' class for calendar and I pulled out students from our class and her class to work on letter recognition. We played a lot of games while practicing letters! We played a game where the students put topping on a pizza, identifying the letter on each topping and finding that letter on the pizza. The students also played alphabet chutes and ladders, as well as played a "fishing" game where the students fished out letters and worked on identifying them! We also practiced making the letters using our handwriting without tears pieces. The students were able to show me how to make the letters on their own!

In calendar with Miss. Riggs' the students worked on using different shapes to make a jack-o-lantern. They also practiced counting, writing numbers, making tally marks and counting them, spelling our color of the week (black), and much more! Here is a picture of the students working on the jack-o-lantern with Miss. Riggs.

The students earned their "black" books this week! We read them together in class, the students went through and circled the word black throughout their book, and they read it to their pre-school reading buddies!

The students continued to practice writing and counting numbers through ten! They are almost through their whole counting pumpkins book! We just have to finish coloring it in and then the students are going to read it to our pre-school reading buddies next Friday!

We continued to work in different workstations this week! We have literacy and math stations!

Our literacy stations included matching pictures to their initial sound, practicing identifying and matching letters, writing our site words, counting how many syllables it has, and writing different letters.

For our math stations we had some shape stations where the students put together different shapes, as well as identifying colors. The students also practiced looking at numbers and counting out the correct number of buttons to go with the number.

We have been enjoying the past couple of warmer days outside! The students love playing on the playground and were having "slide races"!

This week was bus driver appreciation week, so the students drew pictures and words on a Thank You school bus! They also practiced their cutting skills by cutting the school bus out! They are so excited to give them to the bus drivers and let them know how much they appreciate them!

This week we have been talking more about the season Fall. We have been reading fall themed books, as well as talking about the leaves changing and the weather changing. We have been implanting it into our "writers workshop", where the students get to draw detailed pictures, add labels to their pictures, as well as write what they are drawing about. Sometimes I will help the student with writing what their drawing is about, but if the student wants to try to write it on their own I will allow them to do that as well. I will be collecting these in the students writing folders. So far this week we wrote about what we were going to be for Halloween, our favorite thing to do in the fall, as well as our favorite thing about fall.

Typically during this time I am working with small groups helping them draw their pictures, so unfortunately I am not able to get many pictures of the students working on their writing.

Thursday we talked about some of our favorite things to do in the fall! The students shared that they enjoy carving pumpkins with their families, watching the leaves change on trees, jumping in leaf piles, and more! After discussing some of their favorite things, they were able to make a fall banner piece that I hung up in our classroom. They colored in the leaves on the banner, and drew a picture of what they enjoy to do in the fall. They also told me what they enjoyed to do and I wrote it on the banner!

I displayed their art work over our windows in the classroom!

On Thursday we also did a color changing experiment with Miss. Riggs' class. We first mixed red water with yeast with blue water to see what color it would turn! After mixing those two colors together we mixed the product in with hydrogen peroxide in our water bottles. Before going outside and mixing the colors we talked about what color we thought the two would turn into. We also talked about what hydrogen peroxide is, and talked about how we might use it on scrapes at home when we get hurt. We discussed what it does when it is put on a cut, and then discussed what we thought would happen when we mixed it with the yeast and water.

We documented our observations, and our predictions before going outside to do the experiment as well.

We took a class vote to see what colors the students thought it would turn! Almost all thought it would turn purple!

Here is a picture of the materials that we mixed.

We captured a video of the students reactions when they mixed the hydrogen peroxide and the purplish water to say the least chaos occurred. But man was it fun! As my 7 year old cousin Dirk said when we tested out the experiment Wednesday "It didn't turn purple but its AMAZING". I think our classes agreed!

After doing our experiment the students came in and documented what happened and the reaction they saw on their papers as well!

Important papers sent home this week:

Also, please remember to sign up for the bloomz app or online if you have not already as that it what I will be using to schedule conferences! If you are unable to download the app or are having problems please let me know so I can either help you in accessing it, or I can let you know what dates and times are still available to see if they work with your schedule!

Also, I sent home a paper with the students I-Ready login information a week or so ago but forgot to include it in the blog post! You can go to the website at home to allow your child to practice their reading and math skills. This is just for extra practice and is not required! Sorry for any confusion! If you need another one please let me know!

Lastly, we received some free pencil boxes with supplies in them, and folders from a store called "Crayons to Classrooms". I put all of the students names on the green folders, they will be using them from now on to help keep their papers from getting crumbled and to keep things organized. I will be sending home the pencil boxes next week, those can be kept at home!

Have a great weekend
Ms. Dupont
