Wow, we got a lot done this week!! We had a fun but of course, busy week! Take a look below at what we worked on this week. We participated in the program "Pirates and Peeps" where high school students came to our classroom to help out. The students enjoyed showing them how our I wonder time works, reading to them, and exploring with them. We can't wait for the next on in December!
Here are a few pictures of our friends working during our workstation time. Madison and Lily both enjoyed making patterns with different materials.
One of our friends created a rainbow with the marker lids.
Carson and Soleil wanted to use the lids to spell Mo Willems name. They decided to use their resources and find one of his books with his name on it to help them. They were so proud of themselves and were excited to share their work with their peers.
Elleigh made her name and Sarah was practicing making her letters.
Brooklyn used our step by step directions to make a few of Mo Willem's characters. She also decided to use a speech bubble like Mo and make them say "Blue" and "Gray".
We finished our yellow color mosaic and hung it up in our room!
We are now working on our blue mosaic.
We finished the letter cards for L & T. They turned out great!
Wednesday was Braxton's birthday so we sang happy birthday to him. We used the sign language motions and spelled his name in sign language.
He brought in popcorn balls as a nice healthy treat to share with the class. They enjoyed them!
We also watched Charlotte's Web since we were finished with the book. Afterwards, we discussed what was different as well as what was the same between the book and the movie.
We also used black paper, chalk, and glitter glue to make webs with our names in them just like Charlotte's Web. We will be displaying them on our bulletin board in the hallway.
In order to prepare for our upcoming report cards we have been doing a lot of work in our data folders. The students are in charge of their learning so they are the ones that mark what they know in their folders. They draw shapes, write numbers, count, list the letters and letter sounds and many more in order to show us what they know in order to meet 1st quarter benchmarks.
On Thursday, we did a special activity in literacy lab. We worked on an 'Apples and Pumpkins ABC's' book. They had to cut out the lowercase letters and glue them next to the correct uppercase letter. We practiced our fine motor skills, cutting skills and literacy skills with this activity.
On Friday we cut open our pumpkin. The students were interested as to what was inside our pumpkins so we observed. We came up with description words to describe the outside of the pumpkin such as orange, bumpy, and oval. We each made a guess as to how many seeds we thought were inside. We had a wide variety of guesses! Each student got to come up and help take out some of the seeds. They chose to either use their hands or the scoop. Even if they used the scoop they still felt the seeds. We listed adjectives that we thought described the inside such as slimy, gooey, and stringy. They thought it was so cool to feel the insides of the pumpkin and they couldn't believe how many seeds there were inside of it!
We will be carving our pumpkin on Monday and we had to decide how we were going to carve it. First, each student drew a picture of the face they wanted to carve into the pumpkin.
Then we voted to find out which illustration the majority of the class wanted to be carved into our pumpkin. Betsy's drawing above ended up being the winner!
We also wanted to find out how many seeds were in the pumpkin and whose estimate was the closest. The students all helped to sort the seeds into groups of 10.
After they were all sorted, checked, and put in piles of 10, we counted them. There ended up being 714 seeds in our pumpkin and Jayden W. had the closest guess! Take a look at our poster we created with what we observed about our pumpkin and its seeds.
