We had another busy week in Kindergarten! We have been continuing to observe our caterpillars, planting flowers, watching them grow, working hard in Literacy Lab, and participating in the PAX good behavior game. We also did some Earth Day activities like new workstations, read a book, went on a field trip to learn about the dump, and wrote about how we can help the Earth. Take a look below for more details on our exciting week!
We have been continuing to watch our caterpillars grow. They have been eating the food in their cups and getting so big! By the end of the week they started to go to the top of their cup and form a J which means they will be making their chrysalis soon! The students have enjoyed watching the process so far and they can't wait to see butterflies soon!
The students documented what they have noticed with the caterpillars in their butterfly observation books.
"They are getting more bigger. They are crawling on the cup."
"They eat a lot of food. I think they are going to make a J shape."
A couple of weeks ago Mrs. Boxley helped students plant flowers that we will be growing in our classroom. They have enjoyed watching and waiting and this week many of the students saw sprouts in their flower pots!
They have also been documenting what they have noticed with their flowers in their Plant Journals.
"I don't have a sprout."
"I have a sprout."
"Mine has dirt. Mine has no sprout."
We continued to work hard in Literacy Lab this week as well! Mrs. Arnold worked with students to practice writing letters and played a game of beginning letter sounds.
Worked hard on their iReady lessons this week as well. For our 2 week goal of 100 lessons, the students have passed 56 so far!
Mrs. Ogletree worked with students on sounding words out and rhyming.
In the listening center students listened to the story "Jump Frog, Jump".
Students worked with me on reading the story "Kitty and the Birds", writing about their favorite part, and learning the vocabulary word 'entire'.
"Our entire class had writing."
"Our entire class went to the field trip."
To celebrate Earth Day I added a roll, add & color workstation. The students had to roll the dice, add them together and color that number recycling bin in.
We also continued to work on practicing addition.
On Tuesday we went to a field trip to the Montgomery County Solid Waste (The Dump) to learn about trash and how we can help our Earth. The students were excited to ride on a bus!
Kirby the cardinal was there to greet us and say hello to the students.
We first watched videos about trash and learned about how much the Earth needs us to help keep it clean and ways we can do that.
We went into the river mobile and learned about the river and water systems in Montgomery County.
The students loved the nature room!
We also learned about aquaphors, dams, flooding, and water run off!
Then we took a tour of the Environmental Learning Center and learned more about trash.
A big semi loaded full of trash and heading to the landfill.
The tipping floor where the trash is dumped and loaded into the semi trucks. There was so much trash as soon as they cleared it away, more trash trucks came and dumped more!
Mrs. Boxley & I being silly! No it did not really smell bad where we were!
Ms. Lorelei showing the students where the landfill is where they dump all the trash.
Then the students got to play some learning games like sorting trash and recyclable materials.
Learning about the different light bulbs and how much energy they take to light them.
Finding out how much water they use in a day and how they can save water.
Trash maze.
They also got to pet a hissing cockroach if they wanted to. It hissed when they touched it but it wasn't mean and wouldn't hurt them!
We had so much fun on our field trip. Thank you to Ms. Lorelei as well as all of the parent volunteers for joining us!
They were kind enough to give us all water bottles, magnets, a tattoo, and a pencil.
We also read about earth day and wrote about what we could do to help the Earth.
"Pickup the trash off the ground."
"I can recycle."
"I can pick up stuff."
"I can help our Earth by picking up leaves."
"I can help our Earth by recycling."
"I can help our Earth by saving water."
We also watched a video from Student Treasures about what is happening to our book right now as they are publishing it and sending them to us. We will be getting the books back in a couple of weeks and we can't wait!
We watched the movie 101 Dalmatians since we finished the book.
The students are close to earning a whole class reward for earning compliments. Since they only needed to earn 4 more buckeyes, we voted and they wanted to have popcorn. As soon as they earn the last four, I will bring in popcorn.
Here are some of the Earth Day activities the students did with Mrs. Derrickson while I was gone!
We have continued to play the PAX Good Behavior game practicing focusing and working for longer periods of time. We will continue to practice this as well.
Thanks for checking in. Stop by next week to see what we are up to next!
Have a great week!
Mrs. Brittany Garrabrant
