Family Literacy Night

On Thursday we had our Family Literacy Night where we had lots of activities related to literacy available for families to explore. We learned about the author Mo Willems who is most famous for his Pigeon books like, "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus". I printed off step by step directions of how to draw 4 of his characters; Pigeon, Piggie, Elephant, and Naked Mole Rat. The students how to choose which one they wanted to illustrate to have displayed at literacy night. I will put these in the writing area for them to continue to learn how to draw the rest of the characters.
We started off our night with a book/author "fashion show" where teachers modeled book covers by the authors that the families would be able to learn more about throughout the night. Afterwards, they were able to go to each of the different rooms and do an activity related to that author and book. They were also given a READO board to complete by going to all of the rooms in order to get a prize. We had a great time and it was awesome to see so many of our friends come with their families!
We were in Ms. Hannigan's room for the night focusing on Mo Willems and his book, "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus". The activity they were completing was to create their own book cover.; "Don't Let the Pigeon ___________". Their families helped them write the words and then they drew the pictures. Brady wrote, "Don't Let the Pigeon Cook Dinner".
We had some really creative ideas like "Don't Let the Pigeon jump on the trampoline, drive my mom's car, eat a cookie", and many more!
We also had some coloring pages that they could work on while talking to their parents about the Pigeon character.
We also had a spot the differences page. Lily found her elephant drawing and she was very proud of it!
Here are some of the pigeon drawings. They had to focus on one step at a time and really look at the shape of each body part. This was the most popular one and we had a lot of friends choose to draw him! They all turned out so good.
Only one friend chose to draw the Naked Mole rat.
Here are some of the drawings who chose to draw Piggie.
Two friends chose to draw the Elephant. All of the drawings turned out so good! They are now displayed around our room.
We had a graph asking if you would let the pigeon drive the bus. The students and their families wrote their names on a pigeon and then glued it under yes if they would let him drive or no if they wouldn't. More people voted yes!
We also had videos of some of Mo Willem's books playing on the Promethean Board so the students and their families could listen and watch.
This friend is not in our class but I thought it was really cute that she was sitting under the teepee reading a book while all of the people around her were talking and working on other things.
Thanks to everyone who came and made this night a great success. We appreciate your continued support!

Mrs. Brittany Garrabrant
