Poetry, New workstations & playground project

This week we changed out all of our I Wonder workstations as well as our center workstations. One of the students favorites was the basket of musical instruments.
In our library we added books about mapping, playgrounds, musical instruments, caterpillars & butterflies, planting & gardening and the sun, moon & stars. These are all things that we are working on and will be working on from now to the end of the school year.
The students have been observing our caterpillars and we have notice that they have been getting very big! When we left on Friday one of ours was in the "J" shape and I have a feeling when I get to school next week, at least one will be in a chrysalis!
Here are Miley V. & Tabitha documentation of the caterpillars as well as them observing them.

The students are writing poems, reading stories & sorting pictures of animals into different categories.
Right: Hayden is matching rhyming words to make puzzles, Left: Gabrielle is playing kindergarten yahtzee

Above: Lexi & Ashley are measuring strings of paper clips
Left: Kaci & Leeland are playing a game with our crocodile where they push down teeth until it tries to bite them and they have to spell the number words as they push the teeth down, Right: Emma & Alivia are putting pictures together to make words.
Left: Miley V is going on our 3-D shape hunt to find 3-D shapes around our room, Right: Putting our alphabet puzzle together

Above: Emily & Chaceten are playing subtraction bowling & writing number sentences to match how many pins they started with, how many they knocked down and how many are left.
In moving forward with our playground project we decided to sketch the playground to include what is already on our playground. We took our lesson outside in the beautiful weather to discuss what we needed to include in our sketches. Here are some pictures of the students around the playground sketching.
Afterwards we shared what we included and where we included them.
Here are two of our completed playground sketches.
We looked at what our playground looked like on Google Earth and the students were amazed! They couldn't believe that I was able to find our playground and what it looked like from above.
We discussed as a class how we can extend our learning and what the students might want to add with the money our school has raised for our playground fund. They came up with a music wall, easel, musical instruments, bowling alley, rope climbing wall, rock climbing wall, lawn dice, balance beam, rope monkey bars. water play area, wooden pirate ship, sand play area and light pergola.
We voted as a class and here are the inspiration pictures we found on pinterest for the 5 things they have chosen:
Balance Beam & Wooden Pirate Ship
Rope Climbing Area & Light Pergola
Outdoor Painting Easel

We have been working on poetry a lot in order to prepare for our Poetry Cafe coming up this coming week! The students are excited to share their work with you all!
We wrote "I Wish" poems about things that we wish and hope for.
We wrote 5 senses poems about jelly beans and how they look, smell, sound, feel & taste.
We wrote alphabet poems.
We also wrote concrete poems. Here are two examples in the shape of a cookie & a star.
We also wrote an acrostic poem about spring.
Thanks for stopping by! We hope to see you all this coming Friday, May 2nd at 2:30 in our classroom for our Poetry Cafe!

Have a great week!
