Science Night, Mixing Primary Colors, Bikes, Etc.

We had another busy week in Kindergarten! In Literacy Lab, the students participated in many fun learning activities, had our Family Science Night, shared our work with our Preschool Reading Buddies, got to ride bikes/scooters on the playground, did a color mixing experiment & earned another class reward. In Literacy Lab, we read a Valentine's Day book and other books, sounded out words, made sight words, listened to the story "The Little Red Hen" in the listening area and made puppets to help them retell the story. Ask your child to retell the story for you!
 On Thursday we had our Family Science Night full of many fun learning science activities for the students and their families to explore together. I enjoyed seeing some of you there with your families having a great time! Below you can see the 'Tornados" station where you can explore creating a tornado using 2 liter pop bottles, a 'shell sorting' station, and 'fizzy fun' mixing baking soda and vinegar together to see what happens! 
 I was at the 'Sink and Float' station, thank you for coming to visit me where the students made predictions about which objects would sink or float and experimented. They really enjoyed this!
 There was also a 'slide or roll' station which allowed exploration if objects would slide or roll, a 'shadows' stations which used an overhead projector to observe shadows of various objects, and a 'slime' station where the students could create slime! 
 Some other stations included a 'magnets' exploration, 'color mixing' where the students could explore mixing primary colors together, 'musical instruments' & in the middle of the gym there were science books and seats set up for families to enjoy together. 
 Finally there were worms! The students really enjoyed investigating these creatures. It was a great night full of many great learning activities. Thank you again to everyone who came!
 This week in writing, the students wrote "I can" sentences & "I like" sentences. Below you can see some examples of their writing. Skyler wrote, "I can swim." Elijah wrote, "I can play." Kendra wrote, "I can jump." Tommy said, "I like to play outside." We are working on sounding out words and writing the sounds that we hear, even if the words aren't spelled correctly. They are showing great progress in writing from the beginning of the year!
 On Friday, the students shared their writing with their Preschool Reading Buddies.
 Since the weather was so nice this week, we were able to get out the scooters and bicycles on the playground for the students to ride. The students practiced waiting in line for their turn since there were so many friends that wanted to ride. They really enjoyed riding them, the line was so long! 
 After our last color mixing experiment, the students wondered what would happen if we mixed all 3 of the primary colors together. So we did an experiment! The students received a ziploc bag with blue, red, and yellow paint in it and they used their fingers to mix them all together. First we documented what we saw in the bag before we did anything, then the students made their predictions on what they thought would happen. After the experiment was over, the students documented them mixing the colors together and what happened after they did so. We noticed that when we mixed them all together, it made black, they enjoyed this experiment!
This week, the students earned their last buckeye and a class reward. They voted and decided that they would like to have a "Jelly Bean Party" so we will be having that next week!

Valentine's Day, 100th Day & More!

We had a very busy week this week. We celebrated Valentine's Day, the 100th Day & more! Take a look below to find out more details.

In Literacy Lab, I read a President's Day book with my groups along with the "On The Farm" & "Snowman" books.
The students worked around the room on pointing to words while reading, sounding out and writing words, making sight words, listening to the story "The Little Red Hen", and drawing a picture of their favorite part of the story.
 The students finished making their valentines and they took them home. The students made them for family members or friends. After they took them home, some of the students who made them for their friends were allowed to bring them back to school to deliver them.
On Valentine's Day, the students passed out their valentines to their friends while they worked on Valentine's Day themed activities.
 They received candy hearts to sort and graph.
They predicted and recorded how many they could hold in their hands, as well as created and recorded patterns with them. 
They worked on reading sight words and color words in order to color the valentine appropriately. They also matched the hearts with the upper and lowercase letters together. 
 With our 100th day of school celebration approaching, we did an experiment earlier on in the week. They predicted whether it would take more or less than 100 licks to finish their lollipops. Together as a class we counted and recorded 10 licks at a time until we reached 100. We noticed that it barely made a difference in our lollipops and they needed much more than 100 licks to finish their lollipops.
 We played a Valentine themed game of "I have who has". They students had to read a number that they had and ask to see who had the next number. They enjoyed this game!
Throughout the week, the students shared their 100 item collections. They came up and gave their clues while the rest of the students guessed what they thought was inside the bags. They had a lot of fun with these, thank you for your help in making this possible!
The students made 100 day glasses to wear on the 100th day of school to go along with their fruit loop necklaces.
We also wrote about various writing prompts dealing with 100. They came up with some great answers and I really enjoyed hearing them all!
The students shared their books about 100 as well as some of their writing with their preschool reading buddies. We switched up the groups so the students had new reading groups.
For the 100th day of school, we dressed up like 100 year olds and we had a lot of fun with it. Here are some of the teachers dressed up. The students couldn't believe how old I looked and were amazed that they didn't recognize me at first!

We worked on a couple 100 day activities like finding hidden items in the number 100 and more!
We also did another fun activity where the students chose a Hershey kiss, had to identify the number on the bottom, and find it on the 100's chart. The students enjoyed clicking and revealing the number as well as getting to eat the Hershey kiss!
We did a rotation for the 100th day with 3 other classes. In Mrs. Keck's class the students put 100 gum balls in the gum ball machines.
In Ms. Riggs class, the students used the numbers 1, 0 and 0 from the number 100 to make different pictures. Below you can see a monster truck, butterfly, giraffe, and a minion. They came up with some really creative pictures!
They also did 100 different exercises in Mrs. Smith's class but I don't have any pictures from that one! In our class we worked on making self-portraits from when they are 100. They had to choose the face that matched their skin color, draw details on, and add cotton balls for hair.
They turned out awesome!
While our class was rotating to the other classes, those students were in our class working with me on making their self-portraits. First we watched a video that showed people from ages 1-100 so they could see what happens to their skin, hair, etc. 
The students enjoyed getting to wear their fruit loop necklaces and 100 day glasses for our celebration!
"We are 100 days smarter!"
I sent home these 100 day snacks and hopefully they shared them with you when they got home and told you about their day.
I aged the students and told them this was what I thought they would look like when they were 100 years old. I revealed these to the class and the students thought they were hilarious! These will be in their portfolios at the end of the year for you to keep but here are all of the pictures for your enjoyment!
