Getting Ready For Valentine's Day & More

We had a busy week full of learning in Kindergarten. We worked hard on reading and writing about Valentine's Day since it is coming up next week, made birthday cards for Mrs. Boxley, one of our friends received a district wide award, started a new chapter book as a class, made Valentine's for the special people in our lives, made a fruit loop necklace for our 100th day of school, shared with our preschool reading buddies, and even got to play in the snow!

In Literacy Lab, we continued to work on reading various stories. In the listening center, the students listened to The Three Billy Goats Gruff story again and had to put the pictures from the story in order based on how they happened in the story. They also worked on making sight words with stamps and play dough, as well as practicing writing letters.
When the students worked with me, we reread the Gingerbread story from last week and read a story about Mittens. Then we practiced making rhyming words by changing the first letter.
In writing, we discussed what love meant to us since Valentine's Day is coming up. The students wrote and drew a picture to illustrate what love meant to them. Kendra wrote that love is her mom & Dakota wrote about friends.
Brianna wrote that love is hearts & Anes said that love is a hug.
Devon said love is mom & Elijah wrote love is family.
Also in writing this week, the students made birthday cards for Mrs. Boxley. Her birthday is coming up on Monday and the students have missed her since she has been sick and unable to come in for 2 weeks! I wrote the words "Happy Birthday" & "Mrs. Boxley" up on the board as well as a picture of her in order to help the students create their cards. They worked very hard and did their best to make the best card they could.
Mila was nominated for the asset builder of the month in January and she was chosen as the district's asset builder of the month as well! Mr. Myers from Farmers & Merchants Bank came to deliver a plaque, a silver dollar coin, and say congratulations to her. The rest of the students were so supportive, proud and were clapping to congratulate her.
Mr. Myers also brought special quarters from different states to give to the whole class . The students were so appreciative and thanked him for his kindness.
The students worked on a math paper where they had to cut out numbers on the bottom of the page and glue them next to the matching number of mittens. This helped the students practice pointing and counting one object at a time as well as number identification.
We read a Valentine's Day book called "Little Hearts". This helped the students read number words & color words and then had to color the hearts the appropriate color.
We also worked on a fill in the blank book called, "Things I Love". On some of the pages, the students had to fill in the blank with something they love, write the word love, or trace the word. This book helped the students recognize our sight word 'love' which we worked on all week.
The students shared their Valentine's Day books and some of their writing from the week with their preschool reading buddies.
As a class, we completed a following directions activity. I read the directions step by step and the students had to color the appropriate items on the snowmen. This was difficult for the students because they had to listen carefully to what snowmen as well as what specific items to color.
In order to get ready for our 100th day of school, the students all made fruit loop necklaces using 100 fruit loops. The students will be wearing them on the 100th day of school celebration and taking them home!
We also worked on making Valentines for the special people in our lives. Once the students decided who they wanted to make a Valentine for, we helped them write their names. On the inside, they ripped tissue paper and glued the pieces inside the heart. Some of the students chose to make theirs for their parents, siblings, other family members, or friends. The students will be bringing their Valentines home on Tuesday to share them with you and then they can deliver them to the person they made it for.
We also worked on putting the student's handprint inside a Valentine poem for their portfolios.
We began reading a new chapter book as a class, "Stuart Little". The students have really enjoyed listening to it so far! Ask your child to tell you about what is happening each day.
We read some Valentine books this week as well.
We also read some books to get ready for the 100th day of school!
A couple other new books that I just got from Scholastic for our classroom library.
Friday was warm enough to go outside but the snow hadn't melted on the ground yet so the students were so excited to get to play in it!
Thanks for checking in. Have a great week!
