Fall Family Scavenger Hunt

We had a great time at our fall family scavenger hunt. Thank you so much to everyone who came. We had a really good turnout and an awesome time! We started by giving instructions and explaining our scavenger hunt. We can't wait to have another event like this in the spring. To start, each family got a clipboard, pencil, scavenger hunt paper and a magnifying glass to use in completing their scavenger hunt paper.
Everyone enjoyed looking at the beautiful scenery!
We also went to the top of the tower and looked out at the whole metropark. We counted and there were 81 steps going up to the top of the tower.
We looked down and saw our friends standing at the bottom.
Here are Carson & Tulin with their families at the top of the tower.
Beautiful views on top of the tower.

We began walking on the trail and checking things off of our list. We were able to check everything off! We practices being observers and focusing on details during our walk.
At the end, we spent some time running in the hedge maze.

Thanks again to everyone who came! Have a great week.

Green Lemonade, Gardening & More!

We had another busy week here in kindergarten! Take a look at what we worked on. These are the friends that shared their treasure blocks this week. We learned how to spell all of their names in sign language before we began. Then we created their web from the things they shared on their treasure blocks. Then we drew illustrations of that friend to show a story.

In literacy lab, we played some more games to help us practice writing and recognizing our names. Each group rotated until they had a chance to complete each activity. When they were in my group, they wrote their names on six pieces of paper. When everyone was finished, we mixed them all up and set them up like the game Memory.
They turned two cards over and tried to find a match. Some friends matched their names and some found other friends names. If they found a match, they got to keep it until the end of literacy lab.
In Mrs. Ball's group, they traced their names and then "rainbow wrote" them. This means that they traced their name with a lot of different colors to make it look like a rainbow.
In Ms. Wagner's group, they used magnetic letters to make their names. They challenged themselves to see if they could put the letters in order with their eyes closed! Then they traced each letter on a piece of construction paper and cut it apart to make a name puzzle.
In Mrs. Arnold's group, they cut letters out of magazines and glued them on papers to make their names.
We also tried the broccoli from our garden that we picked last week! Some of the kids really liked it and some didn't but we had a lot of them at least try it.
We made our covers for our exploration journals so we can begin to document what we are learning in them. Some friends used patterns, made a rainbow, used one color or made a design on theirs.
We continued working in our I Wonder stations and math and literacy stations. Some friends asked us to take a picture because they were so proud of their work.
Since we picked all of the broccoli and it will not last much longer outside, we were gardeners on Friday. If they wanted to help, they got a turn to put on gloves, use a spade, and help us rip them out. They enjoyed working in our garden and they already talked about what they want to plant in our box in the springtime.
After all of the plants were out of our garden Alyssa helped me turn the soil to keep it healthy.
Soleil wanted me to share a picture of her hula hooping around her neck because she was very proud of her trick.

As most of you probably heard from your child, we made green lemonade on Friday. We started with yellow lemonade and dropped in blue ice cubes. They were really amazed that the ice cubes were blue! We explained that we used food coloring and they were still safe for them to drink. Once we saw the lemonade turn green, we got to taste it and they were surprised to find that it didn't taste any different. We discussed that yellow, blue and red are primary colors and they are mixed to make the  secondary colors orange, green, and purple. They really enjoyed this color mixing activity and they couldn't wait to be able to do another experiment to make orange and purple.
Cheers to green lemonade
We talked about documenting what we learned in our exploration journal and I modeled it for them Friday. We wrote our color words since we have learned how to spell all three words now and sounded out lemonade as well as ice cube. We ran out of time so they will document next week.
We also started reading Charlotte's Web and the kids are really enjoying it. We talked about how when we are finished with the book we will watch the movie to compare what was the same and what was different between the two.
Dr. Clifford came to visit on Friday to talk about being a West Carrollton Pirate and the 42 developmental assets. We talked about some of the assets (honesty, grit, caring, homework, etc.) and did the "We are the pirates" cheer. We got to stand up at the end and give a big, loud "ARGGHH".

Thanks for stopping by and have a great week!
