First week of school!

We had a busy first week of school! We learned how to be in school for a full day! We got to know our new classmates and teachers. We learned how to use and respect the materials in our classroom. We also learned how to work together and share materials.
We have been learning about different areas in our room and practicing using and respecting the materials in each of those areas. Last week we observed math and literacy material and here are pictures of our friends exploring science and engineering materials.
We picked these pumpkins and gourds from plants growing on our playground. The kids really enjoyed using magnifying glasses to observe them and feel the bumps on them.
We looked at paint chip samples and we each chose our favorite shade of our favorite color. We glued our favorite shades onto a graph in order to see what we had the most of. We ended up having the most friends chose pink as their favorite color with lots of different shades included.
My mom read the books in this series to me when I was little so I'm glad I get to share these with my students. We read many different books about characteristics we need and don't need in school such as tattling, respect, sharing, lying, being helpful, problem solving, etc.
We use these books to discuss what we should be doing in school and how we should be treating our friends. We talked about what it meant to be a good friend and gave friends compliments.
In order to help us learn how to spell our names, we did a fun name activity. The students traced the letters in their name with glue. We also had to learn how to properly use liquid glue so we didn't have a mess! They then chose which colors they wanted to put on their names and ripped the paper, and glued it on the letters. The students really enjoyed this activity. They turned out really great!
I brought popsicles in to share with the students Friday to celebrate my birthday. The students were excited to enjoy them and they were a nice way to cool us off on a hot day!
Thanks for checking in! Don't forget this week that we have QPT day on Wednesday, September 10th and the students do not come to school that day. We also have open house on Thursday, September 11th from 4:30- 5:30pm where you will be able to come and visit our classroom.

Have a great week and hope to see you all on Thursday!
