Stations, Literacy Lab, Treasure Blocks & More!

We had another busy week in Kindergarten this week! One thing we have been working on in our classroom is using softer voices so we don't steal other people's focus. We introduced our voice level chart and discussed how it works. If the magnet is on level 0- No talking, they are not to be talking. This could be when a friend is sharing their treasure block, when I am giving instructions, or any time when it is important for the students to be listening instead of talking. Level 1- Whisper voice is used during work time to allow the students to talk to their partner right next to them and keep the noise level in the classroom low. Level 2- Speaking Voice might be used during share time or singing/dancing time. We rarely use voice level 3 or 4 in our classroom.

We have had friends continue to share their treasure blocks with the class this week as well. Amir shared on Monday and then the students worked on making their illustrations for his All About Me book. They have to use what he shared from his treasure block in order to think of what to draw. I wanted to share two of their illustrations. He mentioned that he likes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles so one of our friends drew him with the turtles. He also mentioned that he likes basketball so another friend drew him playing basketball with a friend.
Lily shared her treasure block on Tuesday.

Betsy shared her treasure block on Wednesday.
Sarah shared hers on Thursday and Carson shared his on Friday.

We started going to Literacy Lab this week and worked on activities to practice our names and small motor skills. The students were divided into 4 groups and rotated through the four different stations throughout the week, The students working in my group made fruit loop names. They traced the letters in their name with glue and then stuck on fruit loops.
Some of the students, like Soleil (below) made patterns with the fruit loops on their letters.
The friends working in Mrs. Ball's group used Q-tips and paint to make dots on their name. Again, some friends like Alyssa (below) made patterns with the paint colors.
The friends working in Ms. Wagner's group practiced tracing their name with dry erase markers and then making the letters with play-doh, pipe cleaners, and wiki stix.

In Mrs. Arnold's group, the students wrote their names on a paper plate in different colors. They worked on using a capital letter at the beginning of their name and the rest lowercase letters.
We have been doing our "I wonder" workstations and exploring science, social studies, art, and writing skills. At the writing area, students are practicing early writing skills like making letters, labeling, tracing letters/words. In the small hands station (right) students are doing activities to help strengthen their fine motor skills in their hands and fingers.
In the science area (left) students are observing science materials and documenting what they see. In the loose parts area (right), students use small materials to recreate the patterns traced on the paper.
In the listening area (left), students use PVC pipe "Phones" to read books to themselves and hear themselves read. Right now we have our color word books as well as a few others for the students to practice reading since they are familiar. In the art area (right), they use the materials to create art pieces.
In the home living area, the students practice real life situations and roles with their peers. We have kitchen materials, food, old cell phones, a cash register, hats, aprons, etc.
In the look closer area the students focus on examining different objects closely. They have microscopes and magnifying glasses to use and many different objects to explore including a dead bug (I think it is a horse fly). We also have a cup filled with different materials down in a sock so the students can't see what is in the cups but can stick their hand in to feel the materials and guess what it is. They also document their obeservations.
In the loose parts shelf, the students use different loose parts materials to create art pieces.
In engineering, the students use different building materials to create structures.

We also continued to work on their workstations. The students work in groups of 2 or 3 and work with one work station each day. They rotate and do a different one every day to explore various math and literacy skills.
Betsy & Amir were practicing spelling their names and sight words that we have learned.
Sorting letters by color and making a stack to practice balancing.
We also picked the broccoli from our garden that I had planted with my friends last spring. We had to wash it first but we will be trying it next week!
We started working on our red color mosaic as well. We will continue to work on this throughout the week.
Mrs. Ball put together our class "Brown bear, Brown bear" book. Each student made a page with their name and illustration. Mrs. Ball read our book to our class on Friday and we put it in our library area for the students to practice rereading it when they are in that area.
Thanks for stopping by! Have a great week! Don't forget that our Family Scavenger Hunt will be next Saturday at 1:00 at Cox Arboretum. We hope to see you all there!
