Chinese New Year & Engineer Visit

We had a great first week back from break. We started reading a new chapter book as a class, had an engineer visit & started our holidays around the world study. In writing this week, we first wrote about what we did over break. Then we wrote "What if you had animal feet?" The students chose which animal they would like to have their feet, drew a picture of what they would look like, and wrote about how it would help them.
 Below Brayden wrote about having bird feet and Ayden wrote about having tiger feet. 
 The students were so excited to see how much our pumpkin sprout grew over break as well! They are anxiously awaiting to see if we will actually be able to grow a pumpkin. 
We began reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory this week. We are trying to finish it before break so we can watch the movie (the old one) and compare/contrast the two. The students are really engaged in the story and can't wait to hear what happens next. Ask your child to tell you what has happened in the story so far and who the characters are. We have read up to the part where the 5 children have found the golden tickets and are getting ready to enter the factory.
We learned about 5 more lowercase letters and matched them to the uppercase letters on our word wall. We only have 8 more left!
Our preschool reading buddies came on Friday and we read a letter book to them as well as shared their best piece of writing from the week. This has helped to motivate the students to be better writers because they want to share great work with their preschool friends!
 Mr. Garrabrant is an engineer at A.K. Steel and came to talk to the students about what he does. First we made a list of questions that we wanted to know about engineering and steel making.

 Mr. Garrabrant brought in goggles, a hard hat, steel toed boots, and blue prints to share with the class. He discussed how they use blueprints and how important it is to make a plan.

 Here is a big vessel. The students couldn't believe how big it was! 
The students picked up his steel toed work boots to see how heavy they were. This helps protect their toes and feet if something very heavy falls on them.
A big thank you to Mr. Garrabrant for coming and sharing his expertise with the students, they enjoyed the visit and learned a lot!
 As a part of our holidays around the world study, our class is learning about the Chinese New Year. Once we research, we will put together a presentation and share it with other classes as well as invite parents in to see as well. Here are some of the books that we have read this week.
This is how you say Happy New Year in Chinese.
 The students wanted to make Chinese paper lanterns to hang up in our classroom so we started by folding our paper, as well as drawing and cutting our lines.
Then we added jewels to give some sparkle and decorated our handle to add to the top. 
Here are some of our finished lanterns. I forgot to get a picture of them all hanging in our room so I will post one next week!
 In China, children get lucky envelopes filled with money. The students wanted to make them so we started by painting some envelopes. We will make the money for them next week.
 The students colored the Fu symbol which means Good Luck in Chinese for their portfolios.
 Mr. Garrabrant & I went to Hong Kong 5 years ago and while we were there we had our names written in Chinese. The students wanted to know how to write their names in also!
 I found how to write them and the students started writing their names in Chinese by copying a symbol at a time. They have been doing a great job with this!
