Dr. Seuss, Family Movie Night & More!

We had another wonderful and busy week here in Kindergarten this week! We continued to work on a few things related to the Olympics, celebrated Dr. Seuss in many ways, had show and tell, learned about PAX hands, shared with our Preschool Reading Buddies, had a Dr. Seuss Birthday Party/Family Movie Night & SO much more!! Take a look below for more details.

We documented the countries who won the most medals in the 2018 Winter Olympics. The students had so much fun following them and enjoyed learning more about each sport.
We did a reading comprehension page on the sport luge this week. Even though the Olympics are finished, we will continue to complete the rest of the pages and learn about each sport.
The students also wrote about what they would do if they were an athlete. Kayla said she would lift weights. These papers will be in the students portfolios so they can share them with you all at conferences as well.
In Literacy Lab this week, the students listened to Dr. Seuss's ABC book and wrote about their favorite part.
They also worked hard on iReady lessons!
Mrs. Arnold worked with students on letter and sound recognition, sight words and sounding out words.
Mrs. Roland worked with students on guided reading.
I worked with students on guided reading and vocabulary. This week we worked defining on the words 'daily' and 'sure' as well as using them in a sentence.
"I am sure that I have school today".
"I am sure that I am right".
For our Dr. Seuss week, we have different themed days. Each day went along with a Dr. Seuss book.

Monday- Red fish, blue fish, one fish, two fish- wear red or blue.
I am so sad that I forgot to get a picture Monday before the car riders left because many of them were wearing red and blue, sorry!
Tuesday- Cat in the hat- wear a hat or stripes.
Wednesday- Hop on Pop- enjoy a popcorn snack!
Thursday- The Foot Book- Wear Silly Socks.
Friday- Green Eggs and Ham- Wear Green.
I also put out some Dr. Seuss related workstations. The students had to search around the room for pictures that matched each box and write the sight word in the box.
After reading many of his books (we will continue reading them as well since there are so many!), the students went around the room and surveyed their peers on what their favorite Dr. Seuss book is.
We worked together as a class to come up with rhyming words (real & made up words) from different word families in Dr. Seuss books such as -am, -ed, -op,  and -at.
After discussing, we came up with a list of words that made sense for our Green Eggs and Ham writing page. This way the students could choose from the list to fill in their blanks or they could come up with their own. I will be making these into a class book!
Laylah said she would eat bread on a bed.
Gracie would eat cake on a snake.
Jayden would eat a hotdog on a log.
Van would eat fish on a dish.
Jade would eat ice on a rice.
Cwenlee would eat a cherry on a fairy.
We also made Cat in the Hat rhyming hats using rhyming words from the -at family. These will be hung up in the hallway for you to see at conferences.
We read a book about Dr. Seuss and learned more about him.
We shared our book about Dr. Seuss, our Cat in the Hat rhyming hats, and our Green Eggs and Ham writing paper with our Preschool Reading Buddies.
On Friday, we also had a Green Eggs and Ham snack. I brought in pudding snack packs for the students, gave them a drop of green food coloring to mix in and make it turn green. Then we added a vanilla wafer for the egg and pretzel sticks for the ham.
The students enjoyed our snack, it was yummy!
On Tuesday we had our show and tell that they students earned. They enjoyed getting to bring in their favorite toy to share with the class and also ask each other questions about what they brought.
In Art Class, the students worked hard to make self portraits and they turned out beautifully! Once they were finished, Mrs. Learner had them add a Dr. Seuss hat on top. I took a picture of the class all holding up their self portraits with Dr. Seuss hats on so you could see how wonderfully they turned out! Mrs. Learner even asked if she could keep them to display at the art show before sending them home and the students were so excited about that!
Our PAX lesson this week was focusing on using our PAX hands to help others. Mrs. Phillip had examples of things we do with our hands such as helping a friend clean up a mess, hitting, etc. and the students had to put it in the thumbs up bin if it demonstrated PAX hands or in the thumbs down bin if it did not. The students really enjoyed this lesson and did a great job at showing Mrs. Phillip what they already knew in this area!
Thank you Thank you to everyone who came out to help us celebrate Dr. Seuss's Birthday Party and Family Movie Night Saturday!! We had an awesome turnout and everyone had a great time! We had cake, punch, popcorn, a bake sale, photo booth, and even a pie your teacher in the face booth!
Here were the brave teachers who got pied before the mess!
Here we were after!
Below you can see Ms. S & Mrs. Corbitt getting pied.
As well as Mrs. Ball and Ms. Riggs.
Mrs. Oda as well!
 And myself!
This is my favorite picture of the day.
Channing's reaction to being able to pie me in the face was hilarious!!
Here are some videos of our friends in our class pie-ing me in the face and even Ms. Riggs!
So many families came together for this event and it was awesome to see, thanks again!
The students have another 2 week goal to pass 100 iReady lessons and after the first week, they have passed 59 lessons! They are so proud of themselves and are working so hard to meet our goal.
