Name Paintings, Red Mosaic & Color Mixing Experiment

We had another busy week in Kindergarten! We started a new month this week and we talked about the months in the year and started our calendar for the month of October!
The children have been really enjoying our workstations and we have done MUCH better with putting our materials away correctly! Here are some of the students favorites!

Top left: I bought these boards with pictures on them and the children enjoyed using the pattern blocks to make them. David and Trayvon are trying to decide which one to make. Top right: We have also been working on documenting while we are in the science and engineering areas. After we build or observe we are documenting on a blank piece of paper what we are working on. Uriel, Chaceten and Emma are exploring and documenting in our science area. I think we have some future engineers in our class because the engineering area is one of their favorites! Hayden and Lucas are exploring our engineering area.

Taha is in our "write the room"
work station and he was looking for words around our classroom and writing them down.

Upper Left: Lucas and Hayden are throwing bean bags to each other with different letters on them. Before they can throw them they have to say the letter and it's sound. Upper right: Lexi, Sebastian & Alivia are working on shading their covers for their exploration journals. They were taking their time to make it look nice as we will be using these journals to document our different experiments and observations over the course of the school year.

Since we have been learning about colors and we are learning our color words, we decided to make a color mosaic for each color. This week we worked very hard on our mosaic and it turned out so great! They were very proud of it! Here is a picture of some of our friends working on it as well as the finished product.

We also finished painting our salt names which the children really enjoyed. They had a lot of fun watching what happened to the water colors as they touched it to the letters in their name. Check out some pictures from their paintings. We put them up in the hallway and as we walked by I heard the children whispering and pointing out their names. They turned out really cute!!

We also discussed how different colors have different shades. We talked about how even though we might have the same favorite color, it might not be the same shade. I collected a lot of paint chips from home depot and let the children choose their favorite shade of their favorite color. We then graphed the results and discussed which one had the most (blue with 8) and which had the least (black, white, brown, and orange had 0)!
When I asked the children what they wanted to learn about colors a lot of them asked how to make different colors. I found this experiment on Pinterest which I thought the children would love and they did indeed! We had containers with milk in them and I put drops of food coloring in. I gave the children Q-tips with dish soap on them and they were really eager to find out what would happen when they touched it to the milk. Some tables mixed yellow and red while their friends at the other tables observed. The remaining tables mixed blue and red while the other students observed their experiment as well. Once they touched their Q-tip to the milk, the color "runs away" from it and they mix together. The tables that had blue and red noticed that they made the color purple. The tables that mixed red and yellow made pink at first and I had to add some more food coloring in order for it to make orange! We discussed how experiments don't always go as planned and we talked about how to fix the problem since we didn't make the correct color. They really enjoyed this experiment! We will be doing one last color mixing experiment on Tuesday and I know they will really LOVE that one as well!

We have been working very hard to try to get our treasure blocks done so we can move on to something else. We are hoping that next week will be our last week! Here are the friends that shared theirs this week!

We are also very close to finishing our word wall! We will be done with that this week also! We can then add our names to the wall along with the sight words we have learned so far. The children were hand models for me and modeled the sign language alphabet. I had them printed and added them to our word wall cards. They turned out really nice and the children enjoyed finding their hands as well as their illustrations on our cards!
This coming week we have the book fair going on and the students will be able to observe during their computer lab/library time on Wednesday. Thank you in advance for the parents who are volunteering for this! It will also be available during our literacy night on Wednesday after school. We hope to see you all at our "The Magic of Books" literacy night on Wednesday from 6:30-8, check-in starts at 6:15. We will also be having a family scavenger hunt outside of school on Saturday, October 26th at Cox Arboretum. More information on this will be coming this week!
Thanks for reading :)

  1. Another wonderful blog post. Thank you Ms. Garrabrant for all your hard work. Alivia came home singing a lot of songs this week and she has stopped crying when the bell rings. You are doing an amazing job.

  2. Thank you for the kind words Jennifer! I love that Alivia comes around the corner with a big smile on her face in the mornings! And yes, those songs are constantly in my head too! :)
