Sports Study Exploration & Visit from Dr. Clifford

We have been working hard on our sports study and continuing to explore some of the different sports in various ways. We also finished our black mosaic and started on our pink mosaic. After our pink and white mosiacs are finished I told the students that I had a surprise to bring in for them to use in the art area!
The students continued to observe the different sports balls in our "look closer" area. Brooklyn was using our microscope to look closer at a tennis ball. They have also been working with sports balls in our small hands area by trying to wrap them with rubber bands like Jay'Veon is doing with a golf ball.
We watched a greatest moments video for soccer, football and basketball. The students were very excited to watch these and during the videos they were amazing with the great sports plays. They were cheering and yelling "OOHH" during all of them!
After watching the videos, the students documented some of their favorite moments in their exploration journals.

Here are some of the books that we have been reading and using as resources. The visual reference book has been able to provide us with in depth pictures and descriptions of each sport. I will be showing them videos of the sports as long as I can find them in order to provide them a visual of these sports we are learning about. The Sports Zone book below is like an I Spy book with a sports theme.
These two books below were very silly books and the students enjoyed listening to them! Little Granny Quarterback becomes a quarterback and How to Train with a T-Rex was written by Michael Phelps and discusses how hard he had to train for the olympics.
We have added this book to our writing area. It shows the students how to draw different football players so they are able to write about them.
We finished our V and X alphabet cards this week and our alphabet wall is now complete! I will post a picture in the next blog post. We will now begin to talk about blends such as th, sh, ch, etc.
We earned our books for our last letters as well.
Dr. Clifford came to visit us Friday to discuss West Carrollton's mission, mascot, school colors, and our 40 developmental assets. He asked them to think about what they wanted to be when they grow up and called on a few volunteers to share. Of course we ended the assembly with our Pirate song. They enjoyed hearing from Dr. Clifford!
Thanks for stopping by! Have a great week!

Mrs. Brittany Garrabrant
