Literacy Lab, Workstations, Illustration Checklists, and More!

We had another busy week this week in Kindergarten, even if it was a short week! We started Literacy Lab full time on Monday, continued I wonder stations as well as math & literacy workstations, learned about 4 more of our classmates, learned 3 more letters, incorporated a checklist into our illustrations to help us draw people more accurately, and much more!

Meet our new friends Layton & Brayden!
Phoenix brought in fruits and vegetables for her birthday on Monday!
We began Literacy Lab full time on Monday. We have been working on recognizing and writing our names with different activities related to various stories we read. We read Chrysanthemum and made name flowers by writing each letter on a flower petal.
We also practicing writing our names with pencil, crayon, marker, and colored pencil.

We learned about Emma, Denise, Isaac, and Gabriel who shared their treasure blocks with the class this week!
All of the students drew an illustration of our special friend that day doing something they discussed while sharing their treasure block. That friend then gets to take a book home full of all of those illustrations. Don't forget I kept each child's illustration of themselves to put in their portfolios!
Now that we know how to spell the color Red, we are working on a Red color mosaic to hang up in our classroom as a reference. We are almost complete and then we will be moving on to work on a yellow mosaic.
We continued working in our I Wonder workstations and exploring various areas around our classroom.
We also continued working in our math & literacy workstations. In our literacy workstations, the students are working on recognizing and making letters, matching upper and lowercase letters together, making words, and fine motor skills.
The picture on the left is going to be appearing in the Dayton Daily News along with other pictures from throughout the district! Look for us! I was told it was going to be next Sunday.
In our math workstations, the students are working on recognizing, creating and writing numbers, measuring, creating patterns, counting one-to-one correspondence, and making shapes.
After we learn a letter, we create an alphabet card for our word wall. Here are a few of our cards that we have created so far. They are turning out great!
The students have also been bringing home a letter book after we learn a letter in order to practice at home. Have your child read these books to you! We have been practicing our reading strategies such as: pointing to each word, using your picture clue when you are unsure of a word, and looking at the first letter.
Ms. Lopez is an intern for our school psychologist and she came in to give a lesson on how to draw a person appropriately. We talked about what body parts we have, discussed what that looks like on a Mr. Potato Head as well as what he is missing from a real person, and introduced a checklist that the students can use during writing as a reminder of what they need to include.
These checklists were right beside the students papers so they could have the visual as they worked. It reminded them that they should include hair, eyes, nose, mouth, body, 2 arms, 2 hands, 2 legs, 2 feet, at least 5 different colors, and 3 details other than the person.
Here are some pictures of the students learning how to use laptops during computer lab time.
Kala wanted to read during recess since she broke her arm when Jaslyn came over and read with her so she wasn't alone. What a good friend! The picture on the right is of a squirrel in the tree. This squirrel was running around the playground and some of the students were following it when it ran up the tree. There was a group of students standing under the tree amazed at how high he could climb. Maybe this will lead to an inquiry in the future!
Thanks for checking in this week! Be sure to check the upcoming events tab because we have a lot of important things coming up! Have a great week!
