Green Lemonade, Homecoming Parade, Special Guest & More!

We had so many exciting things happening in our room this week! The students are learning and growing so much, it is really fun to see!

In literacy lab this week we focused on the letters M & P. We practiced reading books about M words & P words, writing words that start with the letters, and sorting pictures by beginning sound. When we are reading we have practiced using reading strategies to help us figure out the words such as using our picture clues, sounding out the word, and using our pointer finger to point to the word in order to help keep our place while reading.
We focused on writing the letters on the lines and using all lowercase letters.
As we said what each picture was, we focused on the beginning sound. Then we sorted words that began with M on one side of the mat and words that began with P on the other side. If they weren't sure what a picture was they used a great strategy by thinking of words that began with M or P that it might be. For example, there was a picture of a pail and at first many students said it was a bucket. After trying to figure out which side a bucket would go on and realizing that it didn't begin with an M or a P, I asked the students what else it might be. Then they decided that it must be a pail and it went under the P side because it began with a P.
Tuesday was picture day and the students all smiled big for the camera!
We learned about 5 new friends this week who shared their treasure blocks with the class.
Since we have now learned the 3 primary color words (red, yellow, blue), we learned how to make our first secondary color! We started off with yellow lemonade and we dropped a blue ice cube into it. The students really enjoyed making green lemonade! They said that it was "magic"!
"Cheers!"
This was such a fun color mixing experiment! The lemonade was so yummy!
After our color mixing experiment, we documented what we noticed in our exploration journals.
As you can see we labeled our illustrations with the appropriate color words.
As you have seen on the blog before, in order to prepare for literacy night, we have been studying the author Mo Willems. I found step by step instructions on how to draw 4 of the different characters from Mo's books (the Pigeon, Naked Mole Rat, Piggie, and Elephant). The students each picked one character to draw and followed the steps to create their best version of that character.
The students have done a great job so far! We will be finishing up this week and I will post all of the drawings in next weeks post but here is a sneak peek of each of the 4 characters.

Thursday we had our ice cream social and homecoming parade. It was nice to see families at the ice cream social, walking with the ECC group during the parade, or watching along the parade route.
On Friday, we had a special visitor come to our classroom. Scarlett was in my class 2 years ago and is now a second grader at Harold Schnell. They are on their 3 week fall break so she asked if she could come read to the class. The students enjoyed listening to her read two stories to the class, including a Mo Willems story! The kids couldn't believe that Scarlett was actually reading! I told them that they would be able to read like her soon too!
Thank you for coming to visit and reading to the class Scarlett, the students really enjoyed it!
We have now been working on our green color mosaic for our classroom.
Our red, yellow and blue color mosaics look great hanging up on our wall! The students can use them as a resource if they forget how to spell them.
We are reading stories and doing activities about nature for the library's Get Outside Book Club. If we read 6 books and complete 6 activities, the students will get a prize from the library. We read "Little Cloud" by Eric Carle about different shaped clouds. After the story, we looked at clouds outside to see what shapes we saw. We documented what we noticed in our exploration journals.
Other things that happened in our classroom this week: Raegan brought in animal crackers on Monday to celebrate her birthday.
After learning about the letter H, Raegan and Ayden were excited that they were able to make it with these pieces.
Our letter H & K cards. We also completed our L card but I forgot to take a picture of it! We have been working on the letter U now but it's taking us a few extra days to get the sound down.
Thanks for checking in this week! Check back next week to see what exciting things are happening in our room! Have a great week!
