Valentine's Day & Getting Ready for the 100th Day

We had another busy week here in Kindergarten! We worked on finishing up our Ocean Animals study, getting ready for Valentine's Day and the 100th day of school!

We started reading Mr. Popper's Penguins as our next class chapter book.
We have continued to read and learn about ocean animals.
We listed all of the animals that we have learned about from our ocean study. Then we voted on our favorite animals that we wanted to share our knowledge on with other classes. Each student got 2 votes and the 5 animals with the most votes "won". We the 5 animals that we will be focusing on are sharks, starfish, whales, angler fish and octopus. Then the students signed up for which group they would like to work in.
We worked on reading books in literacy lab about ocean animals such as this clown fish book as well as a Valentine book. We practiced reading these books to our peers in order to prepare to share them with our preschool reading buddies as well.
In writing, we worked on writing about love as well as who we would give a Valentine to.
Isaac wrote, "My Valentine is for my dad because he is the best!"
Killion, "My Valentine is for my mom because I love her."
The students enjoyed sharing their work in writing and the books we have been working on with their preschool reading buddies.
In order to get ready for our Valentine's party, the students decorated bags for their friends to put Valentines in. Some students brought boxes or bags in from home that they had decorated as well.
While the rest of the students were passing out Valentines, they enjoyed some healthy snacks as well as some sweets. They had candy hearts and the jelly beans that they earned as their class reward. They worked on a few activities with their candy hearts and jelly beans, more about those below!
The students had to make patterns with their candy hearts and jelly beans then color them on their papers.
They had to predict how many candies they would be able to hold in their hand and then actually count how many they were able to hold.
Then they graphed how many of each color candy heart they had.
All of the students Valentine bags & boxes!
The students passed out their Valentines to their friends.
We have also been preparing for our 100th day of school. We have been using fruit loops to make a necklace. The students have to count 100 fruit loops and then string them onto yarn to make a necklace. They can't wait to wear them for the 100th day of school!
The students also made the number 100 glasses. They cut the pieces out and then drew 100 objects on their glasses.
We also began writing in our books about 100. On Friday, we wrote about what item we could lift 100 of. I enjoyed seeing what the students came up with for this. Below, the students wrote about lifting chocolate bars, marshmallows, and chairs.
I can't wait to share our activities next week with you all. Thanks for checking in.
Have a great week!

Mrs. Brittany Garrbrant
