Conferences, Thank You Notes & Space Presentations

We had a busy week before spring break to get ready for conferences! The students chose their best work from their exploration journals as well as their writing folders that we put in their portfolios. They practiced sharing their work in their portfolios with 3 of their classmates in order to get ready to share them with their families at conferences.
We started making thank you notes for our sports experts who came to speak in our classroom. We made our thank you notes for the Dayton Dutch Lions coaches who came to talk about soccer as well as for Mrs. Powers who came to talk about rock climbing. We discussed what we might write in our thank you notes as well as what pictures would be appropriate to draw. For example, when the Dayton Dutch Lions coaches came to speak to us, there were 4 men so the students pictures should have 4 men in them. We talked about what our experts looked like and what they were wearing in order to make our pictures as accurate as possible. I bet our experts will love the students great work they did on these thank you notes! When we come back from break we will make thank you notes for our high school athletes who came to talk about various sports as well as for Mr. Doyle who came to talk about all sports.
Also this week, along with our open house, Mrs. Gore's class shared their space presentations with our class. They learned about the sun, moon, stars and the Earth. They had various art projects up around the room for us to look at and observe and our class was very impressed with their work.
Each group created a powerpoint presentation on the Promethean Board to share what they learned about each topic with us. Some of the presentations were interactive where they covered up facts, asked us what we thought, and then uncovered the answers. Take a look at some of the slides below.
"The moon has 8 phases."
"The moon is hot in the day and cold at night."
"The moon is a satellite."
"The moon is the only place in space people have visited." "Footprints on the moon stay for thousands of years."
"The moon has no air and no wind." "The moon spins around the Earth every 28 days."
"Stars are made of balls of gas."
"The Earth travels around the sun and makes the seasons."
After their presentations, the students shared their books they made with our class. Mrs. Gore's class did a great job and we were so excited to see their work and learn about the sun, moon, stars and the Earth as well!

Thanks for stopping by! Hope you all had a great spring break!

Mrs. Brittany Garrabrant
