Earth Day Bags, Poetry & Author Visit

We participated in decorating Earth Day bags from the Montgomery County Solid Waste District. Once we decorated them, we dropped them off at Kroger and they will be used to bag customers groceries on Earth Day (April 22nd). The students had so much fun decorating the bags. Take a look at some pictures of the students decorating their Earth Day bags!
The students were inspired by these foam circles and created planets to glue on their bags. They also used gauze netting to represent trash to show the importance of recycling.
Soleil was using our map of the solar system in order to make her bag more accurate when she noticed her name on the map! Soleil means sun in French so it was listed under the sun but she was excited!
We began our book study this week and the students came up with some questions that they had about books. I contacted an author named David Michael Slater through the program Skype in the Classroom who agreed to do a Skype visit and answer our questions. You can check out some of his work and find more about him at his website: http://davidmichaelslater.com/. We downloaded the app called "Tiny Tap" on our ipad and read some of his books throughout the week to prepare for our visit and become familiar with his work.

These are a few of his books that I was able to get from the library.
Here are some pictures from our Skype visit.
The students learned so much from David Michael Slater! We are so grateful for him meeting with us and answering our questions! Thank you so much!
We began a poetry study this week as well! We discussed different types of poems and I showed them examples from past students. I can't wait to see what other poems the students come up with and for them to share their work with you for our poetry cafe coming up in May!
This week we wrote -ing poems, list poems, place poems, color poems, 5 senses poems, ABC poems, all about me poems, and feeling poems.
For our 5 senses poem we used a jelly bean or starburst and used the 5 senses to describe them.
Here the students are using their sense of smell.
They also used their sense of taste and were very excited about it!
The students also shared their poems with their classmates.
Here are some sample -ing poems where we came up with things that ended in -ing. These students were inspired by our recent sports study and wrote poems about sports.
Here are a few examples of our 5 senses poems.
Here are a few examples of place poems about Disney World & the zoo.
A few of our ABC poems.
 Color poems
All about me poems with the student's first name, favorite color, age, favorite food and last name.
Feelings poems about being mad and sad.
We hope to see you all at Math Night on Thursday, April 16th!
Thank you for stopping by! Have a great week!

Mrs. Brittany Garrabrant
