Alphabet Countdown, Butterflies, Mother's Day Presents & More

We had another busy week in Kindergarten! We continued our Z-A End of the Year Alphabet Countdown this week with W-S. Monday was Wacky hair day for the letter W. We had so many wacky hairstyles with hair dye, gel and ponytails.
Tuesday was V so we took an imaginary vacation to Daytona Beach, Florida. I pulled up a web cam and we watched and listened to the beach. We closed our eyes and pretended we were on the beach, with our toes in the sand, water rising up and hitting our feet, listening to the waves and feeling the sun beating down on us. After we "traveled" to our imaginary vacation, we used our imagination to think of what we were doing there and we wrote about it. Below is a picture of the web cam and Brady's writing, "We are going to the beach. I am building me out of sand."
Sarah said, "I am going to the beach. I am making a sand castle."
Alyssa said, "We are at the beach. I am building a big big camel."
Wednesday was U so we had our ultimate sports challenge relay races. The students made 2 lines and I showed them an index card with the name of a sport. They had to "race" with their classmates down to me and back while doing the sport on the card. We had a great time doing these relay races and getting to spend some time outside!
Thursday was T day so we wrote thank you notes to some teachers and other staff members here at the ECC. Lily chose to write to Mrs. Oda (another Kindergarten teacher who we worked with for the 100 day activities), "Thank you for teaching us the 100 day activities." Jaden S. wrote to Mrs. Corbitt (library & computer lab teacher), "Thank you for letting us play on the tablet. Thank you for reading us stories."
Brady wrote to Mr. Doyle (P.E. teacher) saying, "Thank you for teaching me to exercise."
Jayden W. said, "Mr. Doyle, Thank you for teaching us sports like hula hooping and playing. Thank you."
Colemann said, "Thank you Mrs. Garrabrant for teaching me throughout the year."
Brooklyn said, "Mrs. Garrabrant, Thank you for teaching us."
Myla wrote to Mrs. Scherch, "Thank you for teaching me."
Nadia wrote to Mrs. Cokeley (clinic assistant), "Thank you for helping me when my thumb was bleeding and my knee was bleeding."
Brady wrote to Mrs. Pinto (art teacher), "Thank you for helping me how to draw."
Isabella wrote to our lunch ladies, "Thank you for cooking lunch and dinner."
Felix wrote to his bus drivers, "Thank you for taking me to school."
Braxton wrote to Mr. Dave (custodian), "Thank you for cleaning the boys bathroom and lunchroom and school."
Sarah said to Mrs. Springer (music teacher), "Thank you for teaching me to sing spring songs and sing hello there and sing about the ECC and sing about the chick-a-dees, and sing beat in feet."
Friday was S day and we celebrated our students with summer birthdays. Thank you to everyone who donated snacks for our party. We enjoyed juice boxes, fruit snacks, Rice Krispy treats, Vanilla Wafers, fresh fruit, and ice pops.
Our caterpillars emerged from their chrysalis over the weekend and the students were excited to observe them. They had many questions about what happened and how it works. We read a few books about caterpillars and butterflies to learn more. Below you can see Colemann and Leeland trying to figure out what type of caterpillars they were using our fake insects.
The butterflies were so beautiful. We enjoyed observing them for two days before we let them go.
The picture to the right below is of a butterfly that had just emerged. It was squirting red liquid which we found out was how they color their wings.
We figured out that our butterflies were painted ladies. Our butterfly is on the top of the picture. I borrowed this picture from a coworker's blog (thanks Darla!) to show you the difference between monarch butterflies (bottom left), and painted ladies (bottom right).
I wish I would've recorded the cheers from the kids as we released the butterflies. They were so excited! They were clapping, cheering and saying good bye to them!
We have been working very hard for the last couple of weeks on our Mother's Day gifts. We started by planting the seeds a few weeks ago in soil. We watered them a few times a week, made sure they got plenty of sun, and checked on them daily. The students enjoyed taking care of the plants for their mothers and they were eager to take them home to them.
We noticed when sprouts started to come up in the pots and they were all excited!
They also decorated brown paper bags for their mothers to put all of their gifts in.
We made cards for our moms that listed the reasons why we loved them!
Here are some examples of how great they turned out!
We then stuffed our bags with all of the gifts for our moms.
We taped this label on a pack of M&M's.
Along with this, we included a list of questions that you and your child could ask to each other based on which color candy you choose. There was also a poem included that also talked about your flowers. We hope you enjoy your Black-Eyed Susans!
The students with their gift bags!
We also had a visit from the West Carrollton children's librarian, Ms. Gina. She talked to us about the summer reading program and showed the students some of the prizes they would be able to earn. We will also be taking a walking field trip to the library on May 18th to learn more!
The students also got the chance to practice putting in their lunch numbers on the pin pad in order to prepare for first grade. We sent the papers home so you would be able to practice inputting it over the summer.
All of the classes went to the gym to practice our spring sing songs for our upcoming performance on Tuesday.
I also showed the students this falcon's nest webcam in Bowling Green. The eggs hatched and you can see broken pieces of the eggs along with the baby nestlings.
We enjoyed playing outside in the nice hot weather this week.
We also noticed that both our green bean and peas have been sprouting in our garden out on the playground! The kids can't wait to be able to taste some of them. We even found some of the cases that the beans were in and sprouted from and the students thought that they were very cool!
Thanks for stopping by! Have a great week!
