Leaf Hunt, Literacy Night, Scavenger Hunt & More!

With another busy week in Kindergarten this week, we had so many fun things planned! Since we are finished with sharing our treasure blocks, we started our regular writing. We also continued to do many different literacy activities in Literacy Lab, went on a leaf hunt, continued learning about Mo Willems and enjoyed a fun filled Literacy Night, worked with our preschool reading buddies, learned about pumpkins, had our first assembly, had our Family Scavenger Hunt, and more! Take a look below for more details!

During writing, the students were introduced to their writing folders where they will keep all of their work for the quarter. We have been working on labeling one letter for labels in our pictures such as 'G' for 'Ground'. While the students are working on their stories, the students will keep them in the green side of their folder and as they finish them, they will put them in the red side of their folder. At the end of each quarter, the students will choose their best work to put in their portfolios and take the rest home.
During writing, we have been having problems using the turn tables with the shared materials in them and arguing over who is using them. We have been talking about what their options are when these problems occur and what they can do to solve them such as waiting until that person is done, use their words to ask, "Can I please have a turn?", keep working quietly until that friend is done, or choose a different color. I added pictures and displayed it in our classroom so the students can remember these options when a problem occurs.
In Literacy Lab, students rotate through various stations and activities throughout the week. Students worked with me on reading letter C & F books, picture sorts and an activity where they had to cut and glue pictures that begin with the F sound on the fish picture. The students enjoyed using our "witch fingers" to help remind us to point to each word as we read!
Mrs. Arnold worked with the students on practicing recognizing and tracing the letters.
Students also worked on iReady literacy lessons.
They worked together to  do a letter matching game where they rolled the dice and moved to that letter on the game board.
Mrs. Roland worked with students on letter formation & reading letter books.
This week we completed 2 more pages in our school rules book about going down the slide & lining up when recess is over.
We have enjoyed playing outside and are loving this weather!
I noticed at recess that the students have been obsessed with leaves! I decided to take them on a leaf hunt around the school to collect leaves and they really enjoyed it!
When we were finished, the students chose their favorite leaf to try to observe and draw. We have been talking about being scientists and looking at the details and they all did a great job. Their pictures will be going in their portfolios so they can share them with you at conferences.
Literacy Night was a great success, thank you to everyone who came out and participated! I layed many Mo Willems books on the tables for people to look at during the event.
The students could make puppets using blue or white pigeons and popsicle sticks.
We had the DVD of "Don't Let The Pigeon Stay Up Late" playing and some students enjoyed sitting and listening to the story with their families.
Students could also sort pictures by things that occurred during the day, during the night, or both.
Or they could follow the step by step directions to try and draw the pigeon.
Lastly, they could vote 'yes' or 'no' whether or not they would let the pigeon stay up late. Most of the students said no but there were a lot that said yes!
To end the night our Literacy Lab teacher, Mrs. Roland read the story 'The Kissing Hand' to the group. As everyone left they received a bedtime snack & a free book for their family. Thank you again to everyone who came and made literacy night so much fun!
Friday, the students shared their work from the week with their preschool reading buddies. They shared their leaf drawing, a completed story from writing time & our color orange book that we earned.
We have been talking about pumpkins and the students really wanted to cut it open and see what was inside of it! We discussed as a class what the pumpkin looks like, feels like & made predictions as to how many seeds were inside the pumpkin. On Friday, we cut it open to see how many seeds were actually inside of it. The students helped me take out the insides and sort the seeds from the pulp.
Then we put them in groups of 10 and counted them.
They couldn't believe that there were 569 seeds inside our pumpkin!
Friday we had our first assembly to acknowledge perfect attendance & birthdays for the month of September. The students names were called and they got to stand up as we cheered for them!
Students who were recognized will get to take home a perfect attendance or birthday certificate.
Saturday we had our Family Scavenger Hunt at Cox Arboretum. We had a great time and enjoyed the beautiful weather! The students enjoyed looking for things in nature from our checklist. We will be having another event in the spring, more details will be given later in the year.
This week we also learned about the letters O & R, the students earned their letter books and drew pictures for our alphabet cards. They also earned their color orange book.
They completed the orange mosaic!
Our Teach Town lessons for this week were 'Ask Before You Hug' & 'Be a Good Listener'.
We have continued to read many more Mo Willems books including a biography about him.
Like I previously mentioned, the students have earned all of our buckeyes and have chosen to have a PJ party. We will be having our PJ Day this Tuesday, October 17th!
On Wednesday, November 1st we will be having a fundraiser at Raising Cane's restaurant. Our school we receive a portion of the proceeds earned that night if you show this flyer from 5-9pm. Please go out and support our school!
Thanks for checking in. Stop by again next week to see what other fun activities we are up to in Kindergarten!

Have a great week!
Mrs. Brittany Garrabrant
