We had another fun and busy weekend in Kindergarten! We have been working on lots of different things. Take a look below. We have been focusing on story comprehension such as retelling, making connections and discussing their favorite part of the story. Here is an example of one of the pages that we work on. Please continue to work on these skills at home as you read with your child as well!
Here are some of the books that we read this week. Ask your child to tell you more about them!
On Monday, we planted seeds in our garden. The students voted on peppers, tomatoes, and carrots but they also wanted to plant a pumpkin seed to see if it would grow outside better than ours did inside. They can't wait to see if we get any sprouts before the end of the year. They check on our garden box every day at recess to see if there is any progress!
On Tuesday our caterpillars began to make their chrysalis and by the end of the day, they had all made theirs! The students have been so interested to watch them change and can not wait to see them hatch into butterflies!
This is how they looked after I transferred them over to our butterfly house. Hopefully we will have butterflies next week.
We have also really been working on our handwriting and making our letters correctly including always starting our letters at the top and pull down, which line to start with and following each step. So far we have practiced making the letters A-E correctly. Right now the students are keeping them in their writing folders so they can use them as a resource during writing time. When we are finished with all of the letters, the students will take all of their papers home so they can use them as a resource when writing at home.
We have continued to water our flowers that we have been growing in our classroom and some of them are getting very tall! I will share more pictures with you in next week's blog. Each student continued to write about the progress of their flower. Below they wrote "Now I have three sprouts.", "Finally now I finally have a sprout.", and "My sprout is getting big.".
Below: "Now there is a sprout.", "I have three big sprouts.", "I still have one long sprout.".
Below: "My sprout has grown.", "I still have three sprouts some of them are getting bigger.".
We also continued to write about our opinion on various topics. Below you can see that some students chose a horse as their favorite farm animal because it can run or they can ride it. Some chose a cow because it moos. Other students chose sunny as the best weather because you can play outside. We also wrote about their favorite holiday and favorite season but I didn't get any pictures of those! We will continue to write about our opinions on more topics this week as well.
We read a book about 2-D and 3-D shapes and at the end of the book, the students had to draw a line to match the 2-D and 3-D shapes.
We also read another book about the plant life cycle and the students colored it.
We practiced reading our books to each other in order to be ready to share them with our preschool reading buddies on Friday.
Since we have been learning about the plant life cycle, the students worked on cutting out the stages and gluing them in the correct order. We also shared these with our reading buddies.
On Wednesday we began our end of the year countdown, I can't believe it is already time for this! We are counting backwards through the alphabet so Wednesday we began with Z. We celebrated zero the hero and the many times that we have seen him this year. He helps us make our numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and shows up after we see a 9 in the ones place. We watched a few videos about him, did a dance with counting, and drew pictures of him.
Thursday was our Y day and to celebrate, we wore yellow. Lea and I wore similar shirts and the kids thought that was funny! We of course had to sing our yellow song too!
Friday was our X day so we enjoyed X-tra recess! The students were glad that it didn't rain and enjoyed playing outside. Below are some pictures of some of the students playing in our outdoor loose parts area.
Our preschool reading buddies in Mrs. Vogt's class were excited to share their new promethean board with us so we went down to their room to visit and share our work with them. After we were done sharing, we sang a few songs with them.
We have also began working on our bags for our Mother's Day presents. More on those in next week's blog post.
Thanks for stopping by. Have a great week!
Mrs. Brittany Garrabrant
